A voluntary interview sounds like a conversation. It is not. It is an interview, it is recorded, and what is said in it is evidence.
It only changes the fact that you can leave at any point during the interview and you are not detained. That is all. It does not change the recording. It does not change whether the transcript can be used. It does not make the questions less prepared.
Because being asked politely feels like being trusted, and because refusing feels like an admission. Neither is true. Attending with a solicitor is normal, expected, and is not treated as a sign of guilt by anybody who works in this system.
Ring us first. The conversation before the interview takes twenty minutes and it is the difference between an account given carefully and an account given on the spot. We will want to know what you have been told the allegation is, who contacted you, and what date and time you have been asked to attend.
Ring anyway. What was said cannot be unsaid, but what happens next can still be shaped.
